Around Balcary

From Studio Cottage you can look out to the island of Hestan, legendary in smuggling folklore, and beyond across the Solway to the rugged mountains of the Lake District. Balcary is also the starting point for a spectacular coastal walk, where you might see cormorants and fulmar nesting on the cliffs or porpoises feeding close to the shore.

Mountain Biking

The region is a haven for walkers with a rich variety of coastal, forest and hill walks. Climb to the summit of nearby Screel Hill for a magnificent 360° view of the Solway and the Galloway Hills; on a clear day you can even see the mountains of Northern Ireland to the West. Bring your dog – he will love it here.

For mountain-bikers, there are the world class 7stanes trails, or for the less adventurous cyclist, there are numerous more scenic routes. The cottage has secure storage for two cycles.

There is a hotel a short walk from the cottage which welcomes non-residents for meals, and the village of Auchencairn, 2 miles away, has a shop/post office and a village pub. The nearest town is Castle Douglas, 10 miles away, which has a wide selection of traditional shops, cafes and other attractions, including the island stronghold of Threave Castle, and the beautiful Threave Gardens.
